A Hipster Hootenanny

Katia de Peyer $ 67.50
Description If you are looking for something different to round out a concert program, here’s a rollicking hoedown ride that pulls out all the stops! Filled with bluesy phrases and syncopated rhythms, this one will bring down the house! Program Notes “A Hipster Hootenanny” is a vibrant and whimsical work for String Orchestra that blends classical sophistication with the earthy charm of bluegrass and the fresh energy of contemporary music. Infused with playful melodies, unexpected harmonies, and lively rhythms, the composition creates an engaging landscape that feels both familiar and delightfully unexpected. It’s a celebration of the intersection between old and new, as folk music traditions are reimagined with a modern twist. The piece draws inspiration from the genre-blending innovations of contemporary artists such as The Punch Brothers and Mumford & Sons, who have pioneered the fusion of bluegrass instrumentation with folk and rock influences. Much like these musicians, “A Hipster Hootenanny” seeks to explore the space where traditional bluegrass meets modern sensibilities. What may be more unique here, however, is the medium of a String Orchestra—a traditionally classical ensemble—in which the strings are tasked with evoking the raw, foot-stomping energy of bluegrass (without the stomping part), while also capturing the reflective nuances of modern chamber music. In its lively, syncopated rhythms and mischievous melodies, “A Hipster Hootenanny” evokes the spirited atmosphere of a contemporary urban gathering—a hootenanny in every sense of the word. But it’s also a nod to the deeper, timeless roots of folk music, celebrating the joy of communal music-making and the blending of diverse musical styles. The intent is for the piece to be an exploration of musical contrasts. The refined elegance of classical string techniques coexists with the carefree energy of bluegrass, all while incorporating elements of modern folk and rock sounds. This dynamic interplay between styles can create an infectious sense of spontaneity and fun, drawing listeners into an experience that feels like a musical conversation between the past and present. Ultimately, I hope it comes across as a musical celebration of diversity, unity, and the unexpected, just like the vibrant, ever-evolving spirit of a modern soirée.

About the Author

Katia de Peyer’s first book Dancing with MySelf, Sensuous Exercises for Body, Mind and Spirit (Nucleus Publications, 1991; La Source Press, 2026) introduced her method of inner-centering through movement, hailed by Diane von Furstenberg as a whole new attitude about exercising. Her second book Enjoy Your Healing Power (La Source Press, 2025) is an intuitive, helpful guide for developing our healing power.  A ballet dancer born in Paris who lived in Spain to further her studies in flamenco, Katia moved to New York in the late sixties to start a successful career as a personal trainer. There she met the virtuoso clarinettist Gervase de Peyer in 1976.  She and Gervase married in 1980 and lived for two decades in the US and then in the UK until Gervase’s death in 2017.  Katia continues her work as a writer and healer in London and New York.
