I have a 2001 GL-1800 GoldWing. It’s old, but it runs really well and almost never breaks. I had a friend ride it and he complained to me that the front end shakes sometimes if you decelerate and take your hands off of the handlebars. Whaaaaat? Who does that? So I tried it out – he’s right. I’ve never noticed that because…. well, I generally ride the bike with at least one hand on the handlebars. Silly me. There is no sign of any problem if you steer the motorcycle like any sane person would. But it bothers me because that’s not supposed to happen.I did some internet research and then tested my steering head bearings, which show no signs of wear. The generally accepted fix for this condition is a new, balanced front tire and a fork brace. It was time for a tire anyway, so I ordered both at the same time. The tire, however, is still a week out. The fork brace arrived yesterday and I installed it per the instructions.Just a few notes. The installation process went pretty well, but the instructions left out a couple of things. Before you install the brace itself, there are a couple of stainless trim pieces that go on each side. They only go one way – the right and left side, and the top and bottom pieces are different. You just have to figure it out. It only takes a minute and some test fitting, but it’s something that you have to do first. You’re not going to attach those four trim pieces after the brace is installed. Ask me how I know….I took it for a test ride this morning. The front end certainly seems more secure, especially at low speeds. I can still, however, get it to shake if I take my hands off of the handlebars and let it decelerate. With the cruise control on, there’s no such behavior. I need to get that new tire installed…..

About the Author

Katia de Peyer’s first book Dancing with MySelf, Sensuous Exercises for Body, Mind and Spirit (Nucleus Publications, 1991; La Source Press, 2026) introduced her method of inner-centering through movement, hailed by Diane von Furstenberg as a whole new attitude about exercising. Her second book Enjoy Your Healing Power (La Source Press, 2025) is an intuitive, helpful guide for developing our healing power.  A ballet dancer born in Paris who lived in Spain to further her studies in flamenco, Katia moved to New York in the late sixties to start a successful career as a personal trainer. There she met the virtuoso clarinettist Gervase de Peyer in 1976.  She and Gervase married in 1980 and lived for two decades in the US and then in the UK until Gervase’s death in 2017.  Katia continues her work as a writer and healer in London and New York.
